MPOWR FISHING REELS NEW CLOSED-FACE SPIN CAST REEL

The new MPOWR battery assist closed face reel utilizes the Diawa Underspin  80XD Reel with built-in eight pound test line as the core of this system. The reel hangs beneath the rod and utilizes a trigger to cast the fishing line. The motor is smaller than that used on the original MPOWR open face reel introduced in 2014.

This simpler design is more “friendly” to left-handed users as well as anglers dealing with arthritic hands or fingers. Early onset ALS sufferers could find this reel quite useable. Its compactness makes for an excellent reel on an ice fishing rod. The included new Pulse Width Modulator (circuit board speed controller) module can slow down the retrieve speed to tempt those finicky Sunfish or Crappies. This  speed controller module attaches to the bottom of the power button case with Velcro such that whether used on the right or left side of the rod, the speed controller can be rotated accordingly.

It’s a great reel for Crappies, Sunfish, Perch, Trout as well as smaller Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass. We strongly recommend using the leverage of the rod to bring in larger fish. This is best accomplished by lowering the rod down to the three (3) o’clock position while simultaneously pressing the power button. As one brings the rod back to the twelve (12) o’clock position remove one’s finger from the power button. Continue this “pumping” action with the rod until the fish is in position to be netted or brought to hand. This action will reduce the possibility of stripping the reel’s gears.

In early August (2022), we were able to test this reel at Fletcher Lake, Ontario, Canada for Walleyes. It exceeded our expectations as my son, who has Cerebral Palsy with no use of his left hand or arm, was able to boat six Walleyes over eighteen inches in length, including one over nineteen and a half inches in length. With proper rod use and attention to the drag setting, we now believe that the reel will do well catching Walleyes.

Care should be taken pertaining to banging the motor against hard objects or surfaces. Do not grab the reel by the motor.

The trigger handle only needs to be raised one half inch to one inch to engage the pre-cast position. There is NO need to compress the trigger to the rod. Breakage could occur.

The MPOWR closed face reel shares all of the connectors and accessories that are used on the original MPOWR open face reel with complete compatibility: power button case, PWM (speed controller) module, 6’ power cord, roll of electricians tape ( to aid in securing components as needed),3Ah (LiPbPO4) Lithium iron phosphate battery and special charger for the Lithium battery.

The MPOWR system can be used on any spinning rod, including the short rods used for ice fishing.

MOUNTING THE  POWER MODULE (power button case and speed controller)

A roll of electricians tape is included with each reel kit.

The power module,( power button and Velcro attached PWM/speed controller) can be attached to either side of the fishing rod with its VELCRO strap. Right-handed users will probably want to mount the module on the left side of the rod so that the wiring is on the left side and out of the way of one’s right finger accessing the trigger. Left-handed users will want the module on the right side of the rod to allow one’s left finger to access the trigger unimpeded.

If one does not want to use the speed controller, it can be completely disconnected from the power button and the power button directly connected to the battery through the 6’ power cord.

Depending where on the fishing rod one attaches the power module with its VELCRO strap, it may be necessary to use several wraps of electrician’s tape, stretch tape or adhesive tape to where the Velcro strap is attached to provide enough “bite” if attaching to a hard rod surface. This will prevent the power module case from rotating on the hard surface of the rod when pressing the power button.

One of our testers has even detached the speed controller module from the bottom of the power button case and attached further down the rod handle (with electricians tape) to suit his particular needs. He also secures the wire joints, where necessary, to prevent the power wire joints from disconnecting when casting.

Our one-armed reel testers, in Louisiana and Missouri, have been very satisfied with this reel.

Kit includes the following:

Daiwa 80XD Underspin Reel

Power/Speed Control Module

6 foot Power Cord

Bioenno 3Ah 12v LiFeP04 Battery
